Starting Over: Day 7
This was broccoli and I traded a protein shake for ginger sesame tofu on this particular night.
So I'm in a group that's doing the 3 Day Refresh, and they all took before pictures for the Refresh of their stomachs - up close. I felt compelled to do the same. At first it was awful. But the more I look at the pictures of my own stomach, the more human it feels, as strange as that sounds. I'm not brave enough to post here - yet. But here is my weekly picture (weight: 249.4, 9.2 pounds lost):

My food choices contain one extra fat than the program recommends, but I'm eating very little and not supplementing with the fiber shakes the program actually provides, so I'm calling it OK.

Mushrooms, onions, and spinach cooked with a little olive oil and garlic
Half a cucumber with 2 ounces of hummus
And the day is not over, so I may end up eating another teaspoon of almond butter with a banana.
I wish it was peanut butter instead of almond butter. And I wish it was pretzels instead of cucumbers. But I just keep looking at the before and after picture from last year, and I want that after picture more than I want a pretzel.

Starting Over: Day 1
Soon after my wedding in April:
I found out that the position at the school I was teaching for in Newark would no longer exist and I would essentially have to find a new placement. I took the opportunity to try something new. I decided to try my hand teaching music for another Newark Public School. The job was not for me and my mental and physical health suffered immensely. I ended up taking a medical leave of absence before leaving the job completely. And gaining back almost all the weight I had lost. 80 pounds to be exact.
I know that teaching is not the career for me, and after a short stint in an absolutely wonderful school district and a beautiful school with lovely coworkers and charming children, I will be leaving the field of education all together. In this time of transition, I'm noticing how bad I feel physically. I feel slow, big, awkward. Unhealthy. As I pick up the pieces of my life, it's time to focus again on getting healthy.
My plan is simple. I will be eating fruits, vegetables, healthy fats, and vegan protein drinks. When I fasted, about 3 years ago, this blog helped keep me accountable and kept me going. I hope it does the same this time around. And I hope it inspires others.
